Many advanced programs such as the entire Microsoft Office suite has the ability to record actions such as macros. These macros can be reran by performing certain events, such as on startup, on shutdown, or on some type of keyboard command being struck. This type of behavior is called an action within Photoshop, and I believe that the true power of Photoshop scripting is to call these actions from code.

Just read the following post on the performance of try/catch and throwing exceptions. In the author’s small (and completely unrepresentative of real-world scenarios) performance tests, it showed that throwing exceptions is a quite costly operation.

Ah… if only it were that simple. Throwing an exception is indeed a costly operation, compared to most other statements. But let’s get real… the performance ‘hit’ of throwing exceptions in real-world scenarios is completely negligible unless you’re doing it in a tight loop or a piece of code that is being executed pretty much all of the time under heavy user load. In practically every other case, you really won’t feel the difference performance-wise.

Command line WCF Proxy Generation for Silverlight 2 RTM

I have a scenario where my web service app exposes several interfaces, and I want to use all of them from the Silverlight UI. The code generated by SvcUtil isn't completely compatible with Silverlight's WCF, meaning you need to do a lot of fixup to make it work in SL. Looking in the forums, I see mentions of "slsvcutil" and "slwsdl", but I've been unable to actually find these programs. The only thing that Silverlight has is "Microsoft.Silverlight.ServiceReference.dll", in the "Program Files\Microsoft SDKs\Silverlight\v2.0\Tools\ServiceReference" folder.

Adrian Coyler presented tonight's keynote at SpringOne. Once again Grails was a large part of the presentation. During the demo, he created a grails app from scratch. Nothing new, we've seen it all before. Easily creating a web application with minimal code. However, the more impressive piece of the presentation was when Adrian integrated the application with an existing Spring Integration application.

For some reason, it is all too easy not to give the client-side JavaScript code in a web project the same level of care that the “real code” server-side gets. I’m sure I’m not the only who have found myself having to searching through .js files with several hundred (if not thousands) of lines of badly formatted JavaScript code with global variables and functions all over the place, trying to track down some elusive bug. These days, I have a zero-tolerance for code without test coverage – why should I treat my JavaScript any differently? JavaScript is code too…
