Las3r is based on the Clojure source code, so they have a lot in common. For instance, the reader is almost a line-by-line port of the Clojure reader. So if you know the syntax of Clojure, you know the syntax of las3r. However, las3r should not be considered a port of Clojure.

I have recently read and heard about situations in which Flex error handling is misunderstood. In this blog entry, I'll attempt to demonstrate, with a simple example, how Flex error handling works and attempt to drive out some of the sources of confusion. To keep this entry a reasonable size, I'll focus specifically on the Flex handling of errors (synchronous) and won't address Flex handling of error events (asynchronous).

At Xebia India we were having training on Flex, and this gave me an opportunity to look deeper and around this new eye catching technology. During this learning period I came across a free online tool provided by Adobe Flex to create CSS for your flex application. It is not a full fledged application covering all the components present in flex, but with the minimal stuff on board it gives you enough knowledge to extend the CSS for all other components.

The sample below is made based on the Audio Player I implemented before. Actually, I am not video expert and you may find that the application may not be perfect. For example, the seek function in Flash is not working very well and I have no idea to set the smooth properties in Flash as well. (But may be it’s the problem of Flash)

Recently two blog-posts about Adobe Flex shed light on some of its pluses and minuses. And as the title hints, I'm joining the minuses part.

In collaboration with Adobe, Ext is releasing several new enhancements to the Ext.air package today. These include improvements to existing classes responsible for Sounds, Windowing and Database as well as new classes responsible for Notification, Clipboard and File System Interaction. We have also added new samples demonstrating how to use these new features. One of these examples is ExtPlayer, a simple MP3 player, that leverages the new Ext.air.MusicPlayer and Ext.air.Notify classes. You can install ExtPlayer or download the source.

Great examples of the new 3D features in Flash Player 10. This really raises the bar for real time 3D for the masses.

Joshua Partogi recently posted Why You Might Not Want to Use Flex on his blog. I found this blog entry particularly interesting because Joshua does not focus on the usual criticisms of Flex (which often are actually of the Flash Player) and because Joshua's experience is almost exactly opposite of mine. While I have generally found Flex to be significantly easier to use than any other web development frameworks that I have used, Joshua seems to have found both Tapestry and JavaServer Faces easier to use than Flex. As Joshua alludes to in both his blog entry and the linked-to presentation Switching Paradigms: From Regular Web to Flex, it is really a matter of experience and perspective.

I would be curious to find out how others view the platforms, especially from the standpoint of external application developers, but having been on the inside of both of these projects, here are some points of comparison. I’m attempting to be objective here and just point out some of the areas to consider. But since I used to work at Sun on Java/JavaFX and now work on the Flex team at Adobe you should filter appropriately.

Alchemy translates C/C++ into ActionScript 3.0 to play in Flash Player 10 and AIR 1.5. One possible application: Bringing over games authored in C and C++ to Flash. Furthering the "come-to-Flash" message, Alchemy also lets you play Ogg Vorbis and Lib Vorbis that were previously unable to run in the Flash Player or AIR. ®

Flash Catalyst is what everyone formerly knew as Thermo and Flex Builder 4 is the "Gumbo" release. Traditionally, Adobe always invested in developer productivity tools for Flex but they are now spreading out to design-oriented tools with Flash Catalyst, Flash Pro CS4 ad FXG.

After a couple of years in development, Yahoo! officially launched their BrowserPlus plugin at a party on the Yahoo! campus today. BrowserPlus is a new cross-browser plugin from Yahoo! that enables what they’re called “in-browser desktop applications,” which is a fancy way of saying that it allows developers to add desktop-like functionality to web-based apps. The BrowserPlus approach is a bit different from Gears (a Google-led open source project), which is a desktop wrapper for web apps with local data store, and Adobe’s AIR, which recreates a web environment on the desktop, though there is some overlap.
